Combating Fragrance Fatigue (Vectair Systems)

Our senses help us to make sense of the world around us. Although the human sense of smell is feeble compared to that of most animals, it is still very acute. We can recognise thousands of different odours and our body uses the sense of smell in many different ways. It is useful as a warning mechanism, warning us of dangers such as smoke or poisonous gases. It helps us to taste and appreciate different foods, drinks and flavours, although compared to our sense of taste, our sense of smell is 10,000 more sensitive.

Smells can also trigger memories, as the olfactory receptors in the nose are connected to the part of our brain that deals with emotions. This is why, like Marmite, we either love or hate certain smells. Fragrance is able to uniquely activate our memory and emotions like no other stimulating source. Some ingredients, such as patchouli, have been used historically – it was a thing of tradition back in Roman times to commonly use patchouli as an appetite stimulant.

Olfactory receptors

Research in the US has found that exposure to a pleasant scent in a retail environment (more specifically a shoe shop) positively affected the way shoppers viewed the shoes on display. When compared to the same store using no scent but displaying the identical pair of shoes, over 80% of shoppers found them more attractive. But in places like offices, reception areas or even washrooms, where the same people might come and go on a regular basis, we have to consider factors like fragrance fatigue. Fragrance fatigue is where, in simple terms, you get so used to the smell of a certain fragrance that you no longer notice it. Fragrance fatigue has even been blamed for a drop in the consumer scent market. The gradual acclimation to a perfume of aftershave means we can no longer smell it on ourselves, and therefore don’t buy it again.

At Vectair Systems, we use historical, cultural and current trends along with existing research, to create our distinctive scents for our air fresheners. We also have a solution to combat fragrance fatigue, in the form of a solid air freshener utilising unique multi-phasing technology. A ceramic capsule is infused with a high quality perfumes, then complemented by an integrated internal fragrance core. These combine and diffuse powerful key fragrance notes that are subtly different. The diffusion rate of fragrance moving through the ceramic capsule is much different to the fragrance evaporating from the surface of the fragrance core. This means that the start fragrance transforms into something very different over time.

These blends of complementary but differing fragrance notes specifically eliminate fragrance fatigue in a revolutionary way, all from one single passive aircare system.
